Alice Tay Lecture on Law and Human Rights: Dr Tom Calma, Dr Jill Guthrie and Dr Michael Levy on 'Unpacking Justice Re-investment'

Annual Alice Tay Lecture in law and Human Rights 2016

The Herbert and Valmae Freilich Foundation in conjunction with the University of Canberra presents the 2016 Alice Tay Lecture on Law and Human Rights 'Unpacking Justice Re-investment'

Justice Reinvestment is a philosophy and policy option for rethinking the criminal justice system so that large sums of taxpayer money are not spent on imprisoning people for low level activity.  It requires a political decision to invest that money back into the community.  It can be conceptualised as a set of responses to a growing body of research showing that a smaller number of communities is responsible for high amount of incarcerated people and correctional services spending. This panel discussion is aimed at understanding in detail how such a philosophy and policy can help to reduce incarceration rates and make real, and long-term, impacts in criminal justice.

A panel discussion with:

Dr Tom Calma, University of Canberra Chancellor and Co-Chair Reconciliation Australia
Dr Jill Guthrie, Senior Fellow, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health and Director of Research and Knowledge Translation, Lowitja Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research
Dr Michael Levy, Director Corrections Health, ACT Health

Q&A will be facilitated by Associate Professor Lorana Bartels, Head of the School of Law and Justice, University of Canberra and Member of the ACT Government's Justice Reinvestment Advisory Group.
