A panel discussion with:
Dr Tom Calma, UC Chancellor, co-chair Reconciliation Australia
Dr Jill Guthrie, Senior Fellow, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, and Director of Research and Knowledge Translation, Lowitja Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research
Dr Michael Levy, ACT Health, Director Corrections Health

Q & A will be facilitated by Associate Professor Lorana Bartels, Head of the University of Canberra's School of Law and Justice. Member of the ACT Government's Justice Reinvestment Advisory Group.

Justice Reinvestment is a philosophy and policy option for rethinking the criminal justice system so that large sums of taxpayer money are not spent on imprisoning people for low level activity.  It requires a political decision to invest that money back into the community.  It can be conceptualised as a set of responses to a growing body of research showing that a smaller number of communities is responsible for high amount of incarcerated people and correctional services spending. This panel discussion is aimed at understanding in detail how such a philosophy and policy can help to reduce incarceration rates and make real, and long-term, impacts in criminal justice.
