The Freilich Project is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 round of the Herbert and Valmae Freilich Annual Early Career Research Small Grant. We received a number of high quality applications for the $5000 grants to assist research into the causes, the histories and the effects of ethnic, cultural, religious and sexual bigotry and animosity.

The committee are pleased to fund the following early career scholars and their projects:

  • Hyein (Ellen) Cho (Monash University) for the project "Everyday terrorism: The story of a Korean victim-survivor of domestic and family violence in Australia"

  • Dr Umut Ozguc (Deakin University) for the project "Mobility injustices, racialised bodies, and Australia’s pandemic borders: The history of the present"

  • Dr Xu Daozhi (Macquarie University) for the project "Indigenous People in Chinese Australian Newspapers, 1894–1912: Chinese Perspectives"

Thank you to everyone who submitted applications. Next year's round of grants will be advertised in August 2022 for projects commencing in January 2023.
